Want to bring back manufacturing jobs and spur growth?
The news has been grim: debt defaults, deficit, market drops and an unemployment number that resists efforts to pull it downward. But there is something we can all do at an individual level and it starts with our pocket book. We’re not suggesting that you go out and purchase the latest, trendy green item (unless you’re buying an extra one for a friend) but rather when you do purchase basic or household items to make an effort to buy locally.
Spend Locally to Grow Locally
One way to create an impact is to try and spend locally. Its not that we don’t like manufacturing in other places, but creating revenue locally has important consequences. For example, I live in the U.S. and I try and buy items made in the U.S. I think that at the heart of this debit debate is the fact that revenue in this country has declined, and spending has increased. Good manufacturing jobs create revenue. Good green manufacturing protects the environment, while supporting the communities they serve. Next time you hit the shops, look for the MUSA (Made in the USA) label or for locally-made products. By asking in the places where you shop for items made in the US, you can do your part to help increase demand for locally made goods. Encouraging the growth of local manufacturing (or mobile manufacturing), fueled by a renewable energy market could help create the jobs that would allow people to begin consuming, paying taxes and spending in their local economies. Next time you’re in a store, any store, and looking at the cute kid’s clothing or a sweet pair of Converse, ask for help finding the “Made in the USA” brands.
